- Competition: La Liga
- Date: Sunday, 10th December 2023
- Kickoff: 15:15 UTC / 16:15 CET
- Venue: Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes (Granada)
On Sunday evening, struggling Granada will welcome one of the hottest teams in Spain, Athletic Bilbao, at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes in the 16th round of La Liga.
Granada won La Liga 2 title last season, but the current season has been a disaster. Even though Granada was better last year than Las Palmas and Alaves, which also gained promotion, those teams adapted to a higher level of competition much better. Right now, Granada are 19th with seven points, winning only one game so far. Although the Andalusian team has been disappointing so far, they are still only four away from the safe zone.
Athletic Bilbao had several poor seasons, as they failed to secure Europe in the previous six years. This season, the Basque club has been much better, and it seems they are only getting better as the season progresses. Currently, they hold 5th place with 28 points, three away from the 4th-placed Atletico Madrid, but with one extra game played.
Granada vs Athletic Bilbao pick: Athletic Bilbao to win
Granada have been terrible this season, winning only once in 16 games. Lately, it seems they are only getting worse, and in the last seven games, the Andalusian team has lost on six occasions, including a Cup game against Arosa SC. Even though their offense hasn't been too bad throughout the season, especially at home, it has failed them in recent games. In the last five games, they only managed to score twice.
On the other hand, Athletic Bilbao are looking great as they won five of the last six games in all competitions while scoring 17 goals - 2.83 per game. Their offense with Williams' brothers over the flanks looks unstoppable, and considering Granada had big problems defending against teams that are great in transition, we believe this is a terrible matchup for them. Athletic Bilbao generally plays well this season and have lost only three games against very good competition - Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Barcelona.
Considering the difference in quality and form is simply too great, and anything but a win for the Basque team would be a surprise for us.

Granada team news
In the previous game vs Real Madrid, coach Alexander Medina tried with a different goalkeeper. Raul Fernandez started instead of Andre Ferreira, but Raul suffered a muscle injury early in the game and had to leave the field. He will most likely be out for at least one or two weeks.
Two players who missed the previous games, Miguel Rubio and Jesús Vallejo, will remain sidelined with long-term injuries.
On 26th November, the club sacked coach Paco Lopez and appointed Alexander Medina the day after. In his debut, the team lost 2:0 against Real Madrid.
On 7th December, the club agreed on the transfer of Bryan Zaragoza to Bayern Munich for around 13 million euros. The 22-year-old winger has been one of the best players in Granada, scoring five and assisting two goals in 14 appearances. Luckily for the Andalusian team, the young winger will remain in the club for the rest of the season and join Bayern in July.

Athletic Bilbao team news
Central defender Yeray Alvarez will remain sidelined with a groin injury, while midfielders Dani Garcia and Mikel Vesga, who missed the previous three and two games, are questionable with minor injuries.
In one of his recent interviews, coach Ernesto Valverde spoke to the media. He said they are getting the desired results at San Mames, which was last year's main problem. The coach also spoke about their good run and stated: "The season is long, and we don't want this to be a random streak, but something we can sustain."
Nico Williams has been superb this season and will be one of the primary transfer targets over the next transfer window. According to Spanish media, Aston Villa and Liverpool are the frontrunners in the race for the talented winger. On the other hand, Nico stated that he is happy in the club and that the fans shouldn't worry about him leaving.
