With 2023 IIHF World Championship starting in Tampere and Riga on 12 May, our MightyTips.com expert Eugene Ravdin briefly previews all the 16 teams and predicts their group stage fortunes.
Just a quick reminder before we begin, that the top four teams from each group progress to the quarter-finals, and the two bottom-ranked teams in the final tournament ranking are relegated.
GROUP A
1. Finland - Co-hosting the tournament with Latvia, Suomi are the biggest favourites to claim gold. Boasting Rantanen who scored 105 points for Colorado this season, Swedish Hockey League MVP Suomela and Swiss National League top scorer Hartikainen, it would have been weird if they weren't.
2. Sweden - Even without the prolific Vancouver Canucks centre Elias Pettersson who scored 39+63 in the NHL this season and NHL top-scoring blueliner Erik Karlsson, Sweden still have enough quality on the roster to end up in the final.
3. USA - With plenty of NCAA players and a handful of NHL veterans to school them, USA will hardly produce another Miracle on Ice this year. But they still are strong enough to rival Germany for the fourth spot.
4. Germany - This year's dark horses. Germany are lacking quite a number of their regulars this time and were experimenting heavily with their lines in pre-tournament friendlies. But the appearance of Detroit blueliner Seider sets the right mood for the German fans.
5. Denmark - Denmark will have to learn how to live without Dahm who had been their first-choice goalie for a decade. Dichow, Seldrup and Rørth who are on the roster for the World Championship, have just two games between them at this level.
6. Austria - Austria lost their key centre Baumgartner to an injury in pre-tournament friendlies while their last year's World Championship top scorer Championship Schneider has barely recovered from a fractured arm. Scoring will come hard for the Austrians and they will be happy to repeat the result of 2022 when they finished sixth in the group.
7. France - Many notable absentees for the French team as they will not be able to count on the likes of Tampa 38-year-old veteran Bellemare, injured winger Dubé from AHL, prolific Da Costa and their best defenceman Auvitu. That said, France are lucky there is...
8. Hungary - They might have won promotion last year, but Hungary are just on another level compared to the rest of the participants. I would be surprised to see them claiming more than a point in Tampere.
GROUP B
1. Canada - Canada may be lacking top stars this year, but they have a young roster packed with the NHL players and they always take the Worlds seriously so beware. Also watch out for the 18-year-old Fantilli, the projected number 2 pick in the 2023 NHL draft.
2. Czechia - Nice mix of players from the NHL, Swiss league and domestic championship gives Czech fans strong hope to make it far in this year's tournament. Arizona Coyotes' Vejmelka should be a star in goal.
3. Switzerland - The Swiss have been among the top world's teams for many years, and they are not going anywhere no matter the roster. And please, put your hands together for the 39-year-old winger Ambühl who will be playing his 18th World Championship.
4. Latvia - With 3 of their 4 best goalies on the team and still waiting for Vegas centre Bļugers and AHL's Calgary Wranglers defender Rubīns, Latvia might find themselves with one of their strongest World Championship rosters ever. Playing in front of their own fans, I expect them to make it through to the top eight.
5. Slovakia - Slovakia arrive with somewhat of a depleted squad since all the KHL-based players were banned from the national team. To make things worse, Fehérváry and Slafkovský are out injured, so I expect Slovakia to struggle for a playoff berth.
6. Norway - Injuries to their best defenceman Lesund and three key attackers Zuccarello, Rosseli Olsen and Olimb are too much for Norway to cope with. They will show their fighting spirit as always, but this will hardly be their best year.
7. Slovenia - Being an elevator team for quite a while, Slovenia might cling to the top-flight spot this time. While Kopitar chose to tend to his knocks and bruises, Jeglič, 35, is still sharp enough to be among the best passers in DEL league.
8. Kazakhstan - This will be a tough tournament for Kazakhstan. They can't count on foreign players (that is their key players) anymore. They have 17 (!) World Championship debutants. And their most experienced defencemen are 25 years old. Sum it up yourselves.
The first matches of the Hockey World Championship have already taken place, and our esteemed expert, editor, and sports guru Eugene has attended the highly anticipated Latvian vs. Canadian match. So, what is Eugene's opinion on the game? Check out his thoughts by clicking on the following link.
