On Wednesday evening, two French giants that have underperformed this season in the domestic league will face off in a match that should have been played around a month ago but was postponed after Marseille fans attacked Lyon's team bus.
Marseille have been among the best teams in France in recent years, constantly securing Europe. This year, they are nowhere as good as they are 9th with only 17 points, already ten behind the 3rd place, which leads to the Champions League. The atrocious road record is the primary reason for their poor season so far. On the other hand, performances in the Europa League are the only bright spot for Marseille, as they are 1st in a very tough group with Ajax, Brighton, and AEK Athens.
Lyon are playing probably the worst season in the 73-year-old history, as they are the last-placed team on the league's table with only seven points in 13 rounds. Right now, they are already six points away from the danger zone. Interestingly, the popular Les Gones are generating good looks and are the 5th best team according to xG stats, but they are simply unable to score and are currently the second-worst offensive team with only 11 scored goals despite that excellent xG statistics.
Marseille vs Lyon pick: Marseille to win
Marseille are a totally different team home and away, as they lost all five matches this season away from home. At Stade Vélodrome, Les Phocéens are still undefeated in ten games, with four wins in the last five. They have been simply great in those recent home games, scoring 12 goals and keeping a clean sheet in three of those five games.
Lyon have been terrible this season, winning just once in 13 rounds. That win came against Rennes, but we have to take it with a pinch of salt, considering Rennes received a red card in 5th minute of the game. Still, Lyon barely secured a 1:0 win regardless. So, if it weren't for that red card, Lyon could easily be the only team without a win in Ligue 1 this season.
In the previous season, these teams met twice, with both teams winning their home games. Now, considering Lyon's terrible season and Marseille's good performances at home, we expect a comfortable win for Marseille.

Iliman Ndiaye received a straight red card in the previous game vs Rennes and will serve his suspension against Lyon. A former Sheffield United forward was far from impressive this season, as he scored just once and assisted three in 20 appearances. So, his absence might not be such a big problem for Marseille.
Midfielder Pape Gueye is also suspended for breaching the pre-contract with Watford. The 24-year-old midfielder has been suspended for four months, and after the Lyon game, he should be available.
The team's captain and one of the best midfielders, Valentin Rongier, will miss his sixth consecutive game with a knee injury. He will most likely miss at least two or three more months. Another injured player is Joaquinn Correa, who missed the previous game with an ankle injury. His injury isn't too serious, and he will most likely be back by the end of the month.
