  • Date: Saturday, 9th December 2023
  • Kickoff: 16:00 UK/17:00 CET
  • Venue: Roazhon Park (Rennes)

Rennes are struggling this season. They hoped to be among the best teams in the competition, but after 14 matches, Rennes gathered only 15 points. That is enough to be only three points ahead of the relegation zone teams. Rennes won two of the last three matches in all competitions, so maybe they are improving. In the previous game, Julien Stephan's team lost 2-0 on the road against Marseille. The home side had much better xG, so it is no wonder they picked up all three points. Rennes are not at the best moment after another loss, but they have to be ready for the tough game versus Monaco on Saturday.

Monaco are where Rennes are expected to be. They are third on the table with six points fewer than the league leader, PSG. Still, Monaco won only two of the last five matches, so their form is slowing too. In the previous game, they won 2-0 at home against Montpellier. The home side had 64% ball possession and 27 shots on the goal, so Monaco's win was never in doubt. Although Monaco won dominantly against Montpellier, it is hard to trust them for the game versus Rennes after a recent struggle.

Rennes vs Monaco pick: Over 2.5 goals

Rennes scored six goals in the last three matches. Two of those three games went over 2.5 goals. On the other hand, Monaco went over 2.5 goals in five of seven matches on the road this season. Over 2.5 goals should be the best bet for this game.

Rennes team news

After a not-so-successful first three months of the 2023/24 season, Rennes decided to change the coach in the previous international break. They appointed Julien Stephan. He led the team to two wins in the first two games in charge, but last weekend, the team lost in Marseille. We will see if Stephan can fix things in Rennes.

Nemanja Matic and Christopher Wooh are unavailable for the upcoming game as both earned suspensions versus Marseille.

Monaco team news

Monaco's head coach, Adi Hutter, experimented in the previous game. The team started in a 4-1-4-1 formation. At halftime, the head coach changed formation to more usual 4-2-3-1. Hutter admitted that the team played much better in the second half, so we shouldn't expect the same experiment again.

Monaco have a much longer list of missing players. They will be without players like Breel Embolo, Ciao Henrique, Gelson Martins, Myron Boadu, and Eliesse Ben Seghir.
